This course is geared for young men and women 16-25 years old, with developmental disabilities. It is designed around a multi-day, 23-mile canoe trip down Ruby and Horsethief Canyons of the Colorado River, a benign but gorgeous section. Through outdoor activities, established upon experiential education models, participants will have the opportunity to develop canoeing skills, social skills, teamwork and independence that will transfer into everyday life. This program requires that all participants be independent with self-care tasks. This is a mobile course based in the Grand Junction area of Colorado, entering Utah for a few miles via canoe and river. Students will be involved in paddling, navigation, camp set up, cooking, cleaning and river & camp equipment care during the course however; the emphasis will be on having fun in a structured setting.
