Job Description: Internship Coordinator
Department: Wilderness Program
Position Type: Full Time, Year Round, Exempt
Reports to: Wilderness Program Director
Supervises: Interns
Summary:
The Internship Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the Internship Program and provides input for therapeutic programming at the BOEC. This position is also responsible for coordinating documentation of select client’s progress on courses. The position works closely with the other program directors and administration to meet the revenue and program goals of the BOEC.
Responsibilities:
Internship Management
- Recruit and market the Internship Program for the summer and winter internships. This includes posting the internship on Internet websites, answering inquiries, and developing relationships with universities and colleges.
- Hire 10 – 12 interns for each of the summer and winter seasons. This includes the interview, intern selection and hiring processes.
- Create and implement the training curriculum for both the summer and the winter internships. This includes working with both the Adaptive Ski Program Director and the Wilderness Program Director to organize training days and staffing and putting together internship binders that house the intern manual and other training materials.
- Mentor and guide interns in their experience here at the BOEC
- Guide interns in writing and evaluating goals throughout the season
- Schedule one-on-one meetings at least monthly
- Facilitate group meetings weekly
- Resolve cabin issues/intern conflict
- Schedule interns for courses, events, ski office days, admin days, maintenance assistance days, continuing education, driving, etc….
- Evaluate interns on an ongoing basis. This includes creating and monitoring intern evaluations on courses and ski lessons, one on one monthly meetings, mid-season one on one verbal evaluations and end of season verbal and written evaluations.
- Be the main “go to” person for intern issues. This includes mediating between interns and between interns and staff, providing advice when needed and providing support for the intern role in other programs
- Provide references for past and current interns including both phone references and written reference letters.
- Assist and mentor course directors in their ability to work with interns and their transition into the role of course director from intern. Provide support to staff needing assistance working with interns.
- Provide support for BOEC’s programs by Course Directing a few courses each summer and teaching a few ski lessons a month in the winter
- Improve the overall quality of the internship experience. This includes updating and improving the internship manual and binder, maintaining a summer and winter training outline, creating events to maintain morale and continuing to think of ways to improve the overall internship experience.
Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
- Maintain CTRS certification, continuing education and ongoing training.
- Provide required supervision and evaluation for TR interns.
- Maintain a TR Internship that meets NCTRC standards for up to 4 TR interns per season.
- Maintain and build relationships with university TR programs.
- Work with the PD’s to integrate TR elements into course planning, assessment and curriculum, staff trainings and client relationships.
- Attend TR conferences and networking opportunities.
Program Administration
- Serve as a member of the Wilderness and Ski Program management teams; assist in the overall implementation of Wilderness and Ski Programs.
- Attend BOEC administration/staff meetings on a regular basis.
- Assist in overseeing site logistics. This may include organizing systems for site shoveling, intern food, site cleanliness, intern cabin, old cabin use during the winter months, etc. This also includes organizing the site office and ensuring there are office supplies, course directors get messages, the intern and course director info boards are updated with what’s going on with in the BOEC, etc.
- Work with the Wilderness Program to assist in developing educational and therapeutic curriculums for courses.
- Create and manage an intern alumni intern database and newsletter to encourage networking, continuing connection, financial support, etc.
- Budget management of the Internship Program
Working Conditions:
- Work may include evenings, weekends, overnight trips and some holidays. Field work consists of camping and outdoor activities.
Qualifications:
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)
- BA degree
- Strong work ethic and initiative
- Management experience
- Strong communication skills
- At least 1-2 years experience in adaptive ski instruction (certification a plus, but not required)
- At least 1-2 years experience in outdoor education (ropes courses, team building & initiatives, canoeing, group facilitation, camping, climbing, etc…)
- Other outdoor certifications (i.e. raft guide, WFR, etc…)
Field Positions
Most of our summer field positions are filled by former interns who have completed a full season of training and coursework, so few field positions are available, but you are welcome to submit a resume, particularly if you have experience both in outdoor adventure activities and working with disabilities and special needs. Similarly, many of our winter ski instructor positions are staffed by former interns, but again, if you have PSIA adaptive certification and/or experience in teaching skiing or snowboarding to adults and children with disabilities and special needs, please submit a resume and cover letter.
